Today's Heroes: Cher Ami, homing pigeon

On this day, October 3, 1918, Cher Ami, a homing pigeon, flying through withering fire, delivered a message which saved 194 Americans despite losing an eye, a leg and being wounded in the breast. She was awarded the Croix de Guerre Medal with a palm Oak Leaf Cluster. Eventually she died of her wounds. See also Cher Ami (Dear Friend) (does play continuous background music).
